Welcome back to A-classes Motivational Monday, a video series where we learn from the brightest minds who for the most part are of immigrant background and can inspire us through their actions. The bright mind we are going to learn from today is Arianna Huffington. Let’s get started and right now.
Arianna Huffington is a Greek-American author and a businesswoman. She is the founder of The HuffPost, CEO of Thrive Global, and the author of fifteen books. She launched the now famous blog and news site, “The HuffPost in May 2005”. In August 2016, she launched Thrive Global, a corporate and consumer well-being and productivity platform.
But what really was her background? As an immigrant woman from an average family in Greece, how did she become a multi billionaire and now rub shoulders with the big guys in our cooperate world? Lucky, you might say, but I don’t think so.
Born as Arianna Stassinopoulus on July 15, 1950, in Athens, Greece, she went on to study economics at the University of Cambridge where she earned her master’s in economics and became president of the well-known Cambridge Union Society, also known as the Cambridge Union.
In 1974, she published her first book, The Female Woman, a sort of critique book on certain trends in women’s liberation movements. Her second book was “After Reason” a political book published in 1980, where Arianna argued the failure of Western society based on the achievement of material wealth, to satisfy the basic spiritual needs of man, while depriving him of individual dignity and independence.
Arianna is definitely a prolific writer. In pursuit of her bigger dream, she went to the United States in 1980. Exactly 6 years later, she married Michael Huffington, a secretary in the U.S. Department of Defence. After two children into the marriage, the two divorced in 1997.
In 2005, Arianna launched the online news and blog site, The HuffPost, co-founding the platform with Kenneth Lerer and she became the editor-in-chief. The early days of the news site was concentrated mainly on blogging and news gathering. It eventually grown to cover a wide range of media categories, from politics to entertainment, business, sports, just to name a few. In 2008, The Observer ranked The HuffPost as the most powerful blog in the world, with a truly global readership.
To say that Arianna was hardworking would be an understatement. Otherwise, how could she rise from the level of a mere migrant to her current position where she is now worth an estimate of 50 billion dollars and employing several hundreds of people?
In fact, many migrants who are working on their dreams are almost workaholic and there is nothing to be ashamed of about that. But while over hustling might not always end up badly, the heavy price, if adequate care is not taken, can slowly build up to become a harsh reality one day. So it happened to Arianna while working on her dream.
In 2007, she suffered a facial injury after fainting in her office due to overtiredness. Since then, she has become a great advocate for maintaining balance between works and good health, as the hallmark of a successful business.
Now, as an immigrant, the story of Arianna can be of great value to you. Let’s be honest about it. It’s not going to be easy. But if you know what you are looking for in your immigration journey and you work on it continuously, you will most certainly attain it, just like Arianna.
The question now is: Do you know why you are here?
