Input Devices

The input devices of a computer are pieces of equipment or hardware that are used to enter information into the computer. Some of the common input devices of a computer are as followed:

The Keyboard: The keyboard is the main input device through which information is entered into a computer. Simply type what you want and it will be visible for you to elaborate on the computer.

The Mouse: The mouse cannot be used to enter text into the computer, but it can be used to interact with the data or information already present on the computer, through the visual aid, also known as a cursor.

Track Balls: This is an alternative to the traditional mouse and it’s often used by graphic designers. A trackball is a pointing device, consisting of a ball, held by a socket containing sensors to detect a rotation of the ball about two axes. By moving fingers on the ball, the pointer can be moved to interact with the data on the computer.

Scanners: A scanner allows you to scan physical documents and convert them into a digital file format that may be used within a computer, exported to other computers or printed out as physical documents.

Microphone: Microphone is another important input device to send sound to the computer, to be stored digitally or output to other devices. This is particularly important for the multimedia usage of a computer, such as audio or video production.

Optical Character Reader (OCR): OCR is an input device used to read printed text and converts them into a machine-readable code to be stored on the computer as a digital document.

There are other input devices that are used in the computer, but we need to move to the second part of the article, which is the output devices.

Output Devices

An output device is any peripheral that receives data from a computer, usually for display, projection, or physical reproduction. Some of the common output devices of a computer are as followed:

The visual display (VDU): The visual display unit or monitor is what the computer uses to output information in an understandable screen format.

Printers: The printer is another most important output device. There are several types of printers in the market today. The two main types of printers are laser and inkjet printers, each of them functioning in a slightly different way.

Speakers: Speakers help to output the sound produced by computers. They too are of various types, from the most basic to some of the most highly sophisticated ones and they all come at different prices, depending on what you can afford.

Speech synthesizers: This gives you the ability not only to display text on a monitor but also to read the text to you. A good example of a speech synthesizer is the inbuilt Windows Speech Recognition or W.S.R.

With the advancement in digital technology, most computers nowadays are able to operate with T.T.S (Text-to-speech) technology, a kind of transformative functionality where the digital text is read aloud, almost like a human voice.

Storage Devices

Apart from the output devices listed above, there are other ways through which information can get out of the computer and they are known as the storage devices as followed:

Floppy Disk: The floppy disk or disk for short is a flexible magnetic storage medium used to store digital documents. With the current advancement in computer technology, the floppy disk is hardly in use these days. Floppy disk has a storage capacity of 1.44 megabytes (MB).

CD-ROM: A CD Rom has a storage capacity of 700 MB. It’s a pre-pressed optical compact disc used to save documents that can be used both on a computer and on other devices, such as CD players.

DVD: A DVD is a digital optical disc for information storage. DVD can be used to store any kind of digital data and is widely used for software and for other information content. A standard DVD has a storage capacity of 4.7GB.

Pen Drive: A pen drive, mostly in use today, is a small portable device to store and transport digital documents. The storage capacity varies.

Hard disk: A hard drive usually has a much higher storage capacity to store information. The hard drive can also be used to store the operating systems and it comes both as an internal and external device.

Ok. Those are the computer Input and output devices and they are what make the usage of a computer much easier and enjoyable.
