The Trap of Economic Tenancy: Why Effective Negotiation Matters to Everyone
In the global marketplace, you are either the architect of your own value or a tenant in someone else’s system. In our webinar hosted yesterday by AClasses Academy, Dr. Gloria Esoimeme, an internal medicine physician, PhD in management, and negotiation strategist, revealed the exact blueprints for Master Negotiation. True negotiation she started during her 30-minute lecture is not about manipulation. But about knowing your worth, mapping power dynamics, and securing a win-win that protects your legacy.
Is your story a liability or an asset? Take the 3-Minute Sovereign Audit to see if your legacy is secure.
For generations, many in the diaspora community have operated under a system of Economic Tenancy. We work hard, collect degrees, and wait for external institutions to validate our efforts. We accept the salary given, the contracts offered, and the terms dictated to us.
Obehi Ewanfoh, founder of AClasses Academy, kicked off the 60-minute live webinar by highlighting a universal truth: in today’s world, everyone needs to master the art of negotiation. He emphasized that these skills are paramount not just for professionals aiming for higher salaries, but also for business owners managing suppliers and clients. Expanding the scope, Ewanfoh noted that even local and international political and religious leaders must sharpen their negotiation tactics to lead effectively today.
When you do this, you live as a “subject” to someone else’s balance sheet. As an old African proverb reminds us thar: “If you do not look around, you will not know that your neighbor’s house is on fire.”

In the economic sense, if you do not master the art of negotiation, you will not see how your family’s financial future is slowly being burned away by inflation, low wages, and bad contracts. To become a Sovereign of your own legacy, you must stop letting others define your price tag. You must learn to tell the world what you are worth, or they will put you where they believe you belong.
The Discovery: Deconstructing the “Negotiation Mastery” Blueprint
During the live webinar, Dr. Gloria Esoimeme shared her lifetime of experience, from negotiating with a strict father in a seven-sibling household to securing a 3-day workweek with full-time pay for her medical team in the United States.
To break out of economic tenancy, Dr. Gloria outlines three core pillars that anyone can use to rewrite their financial story starting today.
1. The Power of “Story-to-Asset” Valuation
Many professionals try to negotiate using only a standard resume. They leave out their unique cultural background, their life struggles, and their soft skills. Dr. Gloria uses what we call the Story-to-Asset methodology, the art of turning your lived experiences into valuable economic leverage.
For example, she shared the story of a colleague who made $100,000 more than his peers simply because he spoke Spanish fluently. His soft skill was his differentiator. Your unique story, your immigrant journey, and your ability to see the world differently are not barriers; they are sovereign assets that can be converted into monetary and leadership leverage.
2. The Decoding Formulas: BATNA, WATNA, and ZOPA
To win a negotiation, you cannot rely on emotion. You must rely on data and strategy. Dr. Gloria broke down the three essential formulas used by master negotiators:
- BATNA (Best Alternative to a Negotiated Agreement): This is your backup plan if the current deal falls through. Your goal is to make your BATNA as strong as possible before you sit at the table. Improve your skills and expand your network while you are still happy with your current position. People smell desperation from a distance; a strong BATNA removes that smell completely.
- WATNA (Worst Alternative to a Negotiated Agreement): This is the absolute worst-case scenario if a negotiation goes wrong. Mapping your WATNA keeps you from making reckless moves that could destroy your current security.
- ZOPA (Zone of Possible Agreement): This is the overlap between the minimum you will accept and the maximum the other party is willing to give. Master negotiators do their homework to find the top mark of the other party’s ZOPA so they never low-ball themselves.
3. Power Mapping the Room
Every office, corporation, and community has a hidden map of power. To navigate it, you must understand the different types of power dynamics:
- Positional Power: The title held by the CEO or Director.
- Expertise Power: The respect given to someone because they are excellent at their job.
- Relationship Power: The influence held by those who connect people. As Dr. Gloria noted, a receptionist who has been at a company for 30 years often holds more relationship power than a new executive. Aligning with them can open doors that policy strictly forbids.
- Sponsorship Power: Finding a sponsor inside an organization who will deliberately open doors and advocate for you when you are not in the room.
The Sovereign Pivot: Build Your Fortress of Peace
Knowledge without action is like rain on stone, it simply rolls off without causing growth. True sovereignty means taking these formulas and building your own Fortress of Peace, a secure foundation where your business, your family, and your genius are fully protected.

As another wise saying goes:
“The rain wet the leopard’s spots but did not wash them off.”
The struggles of the past cannot wash away your inherent value, but you must be the one to activate it.
