Africans Blocked From Fleeing Ukraine – Complained Of Racist Treatment

We all know that this is a challenging time for the people of Ukraine, and we are all praying for peace and calm to return to the country. But why are some Ukraina officials blocking Africans in the conflict zone? What crime have they committed to be treated with such hostility?

“In less than 24 hours,” said Irishtimes, “more than €23,500 was raised by organizers who connected on Twitter. “There are still many black students and families who live and work in Ukraine who is stuck there,” the description for the campaign read. “Many more have made it to Poland to face horrific anti-blackness and racist Ukrainian and Polish soldiers and police officers.”

A Nigerian woman who spoke to the press said that her boyfriend is stuck in Ukraine and his phone is not reachable for the past two days.

“The last time we spoke,” said the woman, “he said he’s waiting for the train from Lviv to Poland… He said they didn’t allow them to board the train. Only white people could and his phone had low battery so he had to go offline.”

This is the not best way to treat visitors who are in your country.

About 20 percent of Ukraine’s foreign students are Africans. Nigeria alone has roughly 4,000 students, studying in the country and many of them have now been trapped in the ongoing conflict.

In the words of Nigerian business magnate and politician, “As Nigerians, our first point of concern should be the safety of our brothers & sisters in Ukraine. I call on the Federal Government of Nigeria to immediately initiate evacuation procedures for Nigerians trapped in Ukraine, even as tensions escalate. My prayers are with Ukraine!”
