The Religious background of Sorrento
The majority of Sorrento citizens are Catholics. The city hosts two major seasonal processions known as:
- Procession of Our Lady of Sorrows and,
- Procession of the Crucified Christ.
Our lady of sorrows procession starts at 3:30 AM and ends at 5:30 AM. It involves many participants usually dressed in white.
The procession will begin in Corso Italy and pass through Piazza Tasso to visit other churches. The Procession is accompanied by incense, a large male choir, and bands.
The second procession starts at 8 PM. It includes hundreds of participants dressed in black. The Crucified Christ procession is usually more crowded with people.

In Sorrento, the summers are short, hot, muggy, dry, and mostly clear, while the winters are long, cold, wet, partly cloudy, and windy. Sorrento`s temperature typically varies from 47°F to 88°F and is rarely below 41°F or above 92°F.
Research shows that the best time of the year to visit Sorrento for hot-weather activities is from mid-June to early September.
The hot season lasts for about 3 months from June 18th to September 13th with an average daily high temperature above 81°F, while the hottest month of the year in Sorrento is August with an average of 87°F and low of 73°F.
The total area of Sorrento is 9 km2 (3 square Kilometers) and the altitude is about 160ft approximately 50m. It has a total density of 1,800/km2 (4,800/ square)
Transportation: Sorrento can be reached by ferry, hydrofoil, or boat from Naples or Capri.
