Now, I want you to imagine the year 1962. Precisely, on September 12, 1962, in Rice Stadium, Houston, Texas. President John F. Kennedy was about to deliver the famous “Mission to Moon Speech”. This speech was intended to persuade the American people to support the Apollo program.

Here is a short clip from the speech: “We chose to go to the moon. We choose to go to the moon in this decade and do the other things not because they are easy, but because they are hard.

I want you to remember that by 1962, no American had gone to the moon. Even the very idea of a man-made object landing on the moon as the Soviets had already achieved by then, September 12th, 1959, was still like science fiction to many.

Yet, JFK was determined to sell the moon mission idea to the American people and because they bought into his vision, in less than a decade, on July 20, 1969, the dream became a reality.

What I want you to learn from this story is the power of a mission. That is, deciding what you really want and going in with all your energy and resources.

To begin this process, take the time to envision your ideal future. Imagine where you want to be in both your personal and professional life. Consider your long-term goals, aspirations, and the impact you want to make in the world.

You see, visualizing your future allows you to set a clear direction for your journey and it gives you something to strive for.

Next, articulate your life mission and core values. Reflect on what truly matters to you and what you want to stand for. Your life mission is the overarching purpose that drives you, while your core values are the principles that guide your actions and decisions.

Think about the legacy you want to leave behind and the impact you want to have on others. By defining your mission and values, you create a framework that aligns your actions with your deeper purpose, ensuring that your work is meaningful and fulfilling.

Finally, you will need to craft a legacy statement that captures the impact you want to have and how you want to be remembered. What is the significance of your legacy statement? Think about what success looks like to you, the goals you want to achieve, and the kind of impact you want to make in the world, or maybe I should say in the life of the people you are serving.

Note that I am not saying what the people around me want. No, what you want because this is your life mission, or better still, your unique way of serving humanity.

Recently in the Obehi Podcast, I interviewed Professor Oluwafemi Esan, Professor of Transpersonal Psychology and Education, at El-Roi London University and the topic of our conversation was Ifa theology.

During the conversation, when talking about life missions, Professor Oluwafemi said that according to Ifa theology, when a child is born, on the eighth day, the elders would gather and consult the oracle to find out the mission of the newborn baby in the community. Then he said, “Your mission is not to serve yourself but to serve others”.

Now, I want you to take a moment to reflect on this: In your life, have you ever seen a mango, an orange, or a cashew tree that produces fruits and eats its own future? Nature is smart enough not to have allowed that as part of the design. So, we are here to serve others so that we too can be served in the circle of life.

Know your vision, therefore, and let it serve you as a roadmap, guiding your decisions and actions as you move forward. Here are some tips to consider for your vision setting:

  • Be specific about your goals and aspirations.
  • Consider different aspects of your life, including career, relationships, health, personal growth, and more.
  • Use visualization techniques to imagine your ideal future and make it vivid in your mind.

I want to repeat that your life mission is the overarching purpose that drives you, while your core values are the principles that guide your actions and decisions. Therefore, take time to reflect on what truly matters to you what you want to stand for in this world, and your sphere of influence.

Defining your life mission and core values provides a sense of direction and helps ensure that your goals align with your deeper purpose. Never underestimate that and here are some of the ways you can approach it:

  • Reflect on your passions and what brings you joy and fulfillment.
