Work smarter and not harder
I know you are all familiar with the phrase “work smarter and not harder”. This term has become so prevalent but some entrepreneurs don’t think it’s possible to work smarter and not harder. I thought like that too, I prioritized working hard to increase my business but it didn’t work out well until I decided to start working smarter. So, if you still think that way you need a paradigm shift to a new way of thinking.
Working smart is all about how you manage your time, and resources and how you prioritize your tasks to boost your productivity so that at the end of the day you will be satisfied with how you were able to achieve your goals for the day.
It’s not the most hard-working people that usually succeed but smart workers succeed almost always. So, telling someone to keep working hard in this 21st century is almost a primitive way of thinking. Looking at some of the successful business gurus like Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos, and Bill Gates, you will understand the necessity of working smarter.
Working smart will help you to;
- Manage your time well,
- Increase your self-esteem,
- Skyrocket your creativity and more.
Now, pay attention to the strategies below:
1. Work smarter with time management
To become a badass smart worker, you need to be time conscious. Examine the spheres where you spend most of your time in. Do you usually spend it doing the things you shouldn’t do or do you spend it wisely?
Effective time management is one of the best ways to work smartly. You should exhaust your time on your important tasks before facing other trivial things, then, this will help you avoid working under pressure and allow you the opportunity to use your creative mind in working on those projects.

2. Plan your day ahead to work smarter
Planning your day is another smart working strategy you should start incorporating into your business routine. After exhausting your day at the office and returning home before you go to bed, get a pen and a piece of paper, and list out your schedule for the next day and the time for each of the schedules.
Outline them in order of importance. Place the most vital tasks for the next day with the less important ones. So that when you arrive at your office the following day, it will enable you to start working on the most appropriate tasks first.
This strategy has been so helpful to me since I started incorporating it, and I am sure it will work for you too.
Of course, make sure you are working from your set goals instead of just any task that come to you. Learn more about goal setting for your business.
3. Consider outsourcing some tasks to a virtual assistant
Try and employ the services of a virtual assistant. When I started my business online about a year ago, it was hard for me to maintain a balance between managing my account online and also working at the office. But when I got the information about the essence of having a virtual assistant, I quickly employed their services.
What will a virtual assistant do for you?
- They will help you to manage your account on any social media platform you are branding your business on.
- They will help you by making regular posts on your account which is a means of boosting your business visibility online.
- They will help you create a quality profile overview that depicts what your brand does.
- They can also help you in replying to your emails and improving your email marketing strategy.
Getting yourself a virtual assistant must not be someone you know or someone you are seeing physically. You can employ people who are professionals in places like Upwork, Fiverr, Freelance.com, and other places online.
4. Stop Multitasking, but concentrate on fewer tasks at a time
Research has proven that multitasking makes people unproductive because juggling from one unfinished task to another one is not entirely a guarantee for success or improvement of revenue.
Cognitive scientists have found that multitasking is hard on your mental capacity. You can’t be efficient and perform well at two things simultaneously. If you try to do both at the same time, your brain won’t have enough space to do them both to the best of its abilities.
Working on one project at a time ensures that you are a smart worker. Taking different tasks at the same time is not healthy and it will diminish your productivity.
Chunk those tasks down and work on them serially in order to avoid burning out. Actually, it’s not our tasks that break us down but the way we handle the tasks.
5. Re-strategize your marketing approach for more efficiency
To get more leads to your brands, you might need to re-strategize your marketing procedure and if you don’t market at all you need to start marketing your products online, right away.
The golden rule of marketing is to know your audience. And the best way to do that is to learn about the challenges they have, the goals they want to reach, and the problems they want to be solved.
Marketing has rapidly evolved in the digital age and now relies heavily on the use of data. This data consists of our browsing history, social media posts, search queries, and general online activity. With this information, marketers can now deliver the most effective marketing at an appropriate time to ensure maximum attention to their message.
Tools like google analytics, buffer, and MailChimp, will help you to easily market your products online.
6. Taking Breaks is a great way to work smarter
Taking breaks while working is one of my favorite ways not only to work smarter, but also more productively. Without breaks, our brains will be distracted and dull. That is why it’s essential to take short breaks during working hours, to rejuvenate your brain and also replenish your energy. Never underestimate that.
By taking a break after completing each task you focus on and not just during them, you’ll be able to regroup and approach the task with fresh ideas.
Having talked about breaks, let’s look at the number seven of these strategies,
7. Discover your strength and work smarter
Discovering when you are most active and energetic to work on your tasks is also one of the major smart working strategies and this is very important. When I tried to write this article last night, I got drained of ideas and words to put down then I had to sleep off. But waking up in the morning my mind got filled with ideas that’s when I noticed that I have been energized.
To work smarter, discover that particular time when your brain is at its peak to produce ideas which you will work with. That way you wouldn’t stress yourself working hard to get your projects done.
When you have deciphered your personality and the best time you can easily perform a task ensure never to fix a meeting then or reply to your emails and notifications until you are done with the task.
8. Learn to say no when you need to
I was the type of person that wouldn’t want to turn down my clients’ requests. I tried to please them all the time. Whenever they assign some work, I would take it despite having piles of work that needs to be done. This cost me my mental health until I learned to say no.
That was when I discovered that I can actually spruce up my productivity and at the same time maintain my mental health.
You too can try this strategy. Stop being a people pleaser because it’s not a way of working smart.
Let me give you some pro tips on how to say no to clients without actually saying no:
- Use mincing words to talk to them rather than saying no outrightly.
- Clarify things to them in a way to make them understand why you can’t take their project at the moment.
- Provide solutions to them by sourcing for an alternative (someone you know that can work on the project) and entrust the task to them.
Learning to say no has a great effect on our mental health by allowing us to value ourselves more. It also helps us to prioritize ourselves and may lead to new opportunities that would have been out of reach if we had said yes.
Saying no also allows us to set boundaries and say “no” where necessary, which can be beneficial both energetically and emotionally
