Personal Story and How I Found My Deeper Purpose

In case you don’t already know, my name is Obehi Ewanfoh. I’m originally from Nigeria, but I live in Verona, Italy, with my family.

As the host of the Obehi Podcast and the founder of AClasses Media, I am deeply passionate about helping entrepreneurs and professionals uncover and leverage their stories. This passion is rooted in my own journey and experiences, which have profoundly shaped my understanding of the power of storytelling.

Arriving in Italy in August 2004, I was driven by a burning curiosity and a profound desire to understand the African experiences in the Northern Italian city of Verona.

Not knowing where to start and with only limited information available, I began asking questions that might seem simple but were actually deep and revealing: Who were the first Africans in Verona?

What have been their experiences away from their home country? And as a new arrival, how could I learn from their stories to navigate my new environment?

Unfortunately, my quest for answers yielded little satisfaction, which further fueled my curiosity. Determined to fill this void, I dedicated myself to documenting these stories between 2013 and 2023.

This effort culminated in two books, “The Journey—Africans In Verona” and “The Color Of Our Children,” as well as a series of video presentations. Additionally, with my collaborators, we organized social gatherings and conferences, such as “We Refugees, Verona 2016,” which was held at Verona University on June 20th, 2016, with a focus on African asylum seekers as a conclusion of numerous interviews.

This research project taught me the immense value of storytelling as a powerful instrument to bridge gaps and foster understanding among different people. Yet, despite these publications, I felt a lingering sense that there was more to be done even though I didn’t know just how.

In 2017, my life took an unexpected turn. Working as a receptionist in a hotel in Verona, mostly during night shifts, I had settled into what I thought was a stable routine.

I had gotten married, and my wife was pregnant with our son, Efua. Everything seemed perfect until one fateful night, 20th August 2017, when I suddenly had a seizure and collapsed at the front desk.

The clients were all in their rooms, and I lay there in a confusional state until the following morning when my colleagues found me in that horrible situation.

What followed was a whirlwind of emergency calls, leading the police and medics to flood the hotel premises. Just like me, who was battling between life and death, the medics were thrown into confusion; they didn’t know where to start treatment because they had no idea what was wrong with me. Also, because I had no prior records of such medical complications.

Lying in the emergency ward, I didn’t know what was happening around me as doctors ran every possible test and made countless calls, but still couldn’t find what was actually wrong with me.

It reached a critical moment when the doctors told my wife, “Madam, we have done everything we can, and we can’t seem to find any solution or know what is wrong with your husband. We have only one test to carry out, though, and it’s the last option.”

By some miracle, that last test was successful. I was placed in a medically induced coma for two weeks so the treatment could have an effect. It worked, and I began to recover. During those vulnerable moments, lying in the hospital bed, I had a serious thought about my life’s work.

Actually, I called it a second chance to reflect on my life and the research project which was the object in my imagination throughout my state in a coma and my waking days in the hospital.

Why was I doing this? If this was the last work, I would do alive, would I still do it? That period of reflection crystallized my purpose. It helped me realize that my calling was to share people’s stories and help them harness the power of their narratives.

This realization eventually led to the creation of the Obehi Podcast, where I intentionally delve deep when interviewing my guests.

The podcast’s slogan, which initially was “Everyone Has A Story To Share” and has evolved to “Own Your Story & Share It With The World,” perfectly aligns with this vision.

It’s also in line with this vision and drawing on my 10 years of research project that I created a five-part book series in 2023, titled “The Storytelling Mastery.” The series is designed to guide individuals step-by-step through the fundamentals of storytelling.

I firmly believe that when people uncover their inner drive—the story of where they came from and where they aspire to go—they can make meaningful contributions and lead more fulfilling lives.

Since discovering this truth, I have dedicated myself to this mission wholeheartedly and have never looked back.
