The Speakers and what to expect

The three parts of the brain and how neuroscience affects our personal life.  I will spend time on how neuroscience can affect our personal and professional life, our creativity, our relationships.

The Right and Left brain and the impact it can have on our beliefs.  I will touch briefly on these ideas but will spend most of the time on the impact we can have on our children and the impact we have on our children and how example is so important. 

Iris Teasley – How our brain can be reshaped and the power of our mind and the importance of minding your mind

Our children remember what we do and not what we say.  I would sum up with what Maya Angelou said: “I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel “A story can do the same thing, it can create a connection between you and the other person, and you take them on a journey with you.  

A good story can also help them to feel connected and to remember the story or at least the gist of the story and why the story resonated with them. 

About Iris V. Teasley in her own words

Where I am From and Where I Live Now:

I grew up in the small town of Jasper, Florida.  I joined the United States Air Force at the age of eighteen.  I have lived in five states (Texas, Virginia, Delaware, Nebraska and Ohio) and four foreign countries (Belgium, England, Germany and Afghanistan). 

I retired from the Air Force after thirty years of service.  I retired from Lackland Air Force Base, Texas and moved from a home near Sea World to    Converse, Texas another small town on the outskirts of San Antonio. 

I am married to Zachary Teasley and he is one of the Elders at the Southeast church of Christ, where we have attended since 2005.  We have two children, Jonathan and Maya. 

Some Information about My Family (parents, siblings, spouse, children):

My father was a World War II veteran and a farmer.  My mom worked in various occupations including working as a housekeeper, in a sewing factory and at a nursing home.  I come from a family of nine children, three boys and six girls of which I am next to the youngest in age or the knee-baby. 

I am married, my husband is also retired from the United States Air Force.  We have two children.  Our oldest child, Jonathan, is Deaf.  He lost his hearing at 7 months when we were stationed in the United Kingdom (England).  He was hospitalized for a month with spinal meningitis. 

He has worked various jobs and is very creative and has chosen many ways to express that creativity to include T-shirt designs and artwork.  Our youngest, Maya, does not have a hearing loss, but she is especially interested in caring for animals and she was very involved in the Future Farmers of America since her freshman year in high school and recently graduated with a bachelor’s degree in animal science.

My Education:

I graduated from Hamilton County High School in Jasper, Florida.  I have a bachelor’s degree from Wayland Baptist University in Corporate Training and Development.  I also have three associate degrees: one in Social Services, another in Instructional Technology and one in Mental Health Services. 

In addition, I have a master’s degree in education focusing on special education and a Master of Arts in Counseling degree to become a Licensed Professional Counselor.  I’ve attended many military courses as well as civilian training related to my various job assignments.

What Kind of Job(s) I Have Had in the Past:

I retired from the United States Air Force after thirty years of service.  I primarily performed three jobs while I was in the Air Force.  I worked as an administrative specialist, then as a substance abuse counselor and lastly as a mental health service technician and manager.  

Since retirement from the military, I have worked in a variety of areas:  such as a Deaf and Hard of Hearing Parent Guide, an Education and Academic Counselor with Military Students getting medical jobs as an Academic Interventionist; and as a lecturer and facilitator. 

I am the founder of Internal Transition Neuro-coaching, and I am a parent advocate and educator.  I have volunteered at the True Counseling Health Center as one of the therapists in which I work with adults as well as children, I especially enjoy and relate to parents of children with disabilities and military personnel.

My Hobbies and What do I Like to Do for Fun:

I enjoy spending time with my family and friends.  I enjoy reading, writing, doing jigsaw puzzles, and cruising. 

I enjoy what I call adventure shopping, I like going to thrift stores and antiques shops because I never know what I will find during these adventures.  I also enjoy volunteering my time on projects that I feel make a difference to others and the community. I recently volunteered with the Austin-San Antonio Anambra State Association (ASASA) International Scholarship Program.  Currently, I volunteer at the Randolph Air Force Base Library that encourages literacy and reading to expose yourself to the world around you.
