They play an important role in our lives and they are “the soft skills of today – the tools you need for your personal improvement and to better position yourself in the job market.

The economy we have today is a different kind of economy in that it is more of a service-based, as against a product-based economy. And for you to succeed in this terrain, where the human relationship is now more important than ever before, you are going to need a good level of interpersonal skills, otherwise known as soft skills.

Everything, including the human being, society, and life in general is in continuous transformation. That is also true with our economy, our nature of production, products, and services.

At one time and still, in some of the most remote parts of the world, men have to till the ground with their hands and transport their harvests from farmlands to their homes and then to the market, all on their barefoot.

Now, machines can do those works, so that men can concentrate on other things in the chain of production and distribution. If you still have some difficulty getting my point here, then consider only a few years ago under the influence of Covid19 pandemic.

Like most people, you too were probably locked down in your house due to the global pandemic, and when you wanted to eat food like pizza or McDonald’s, you simply dialed a telephone number, and the food was supplied to you, a few minutes later. This was the reality of the first of January, 2021 when this article was first written.

What are soft skills?

Well, soft skills are a combination of interpersonal or people’s skills that we need to better navigate our personal and professional lives, like:

  • Communication skills,
  • Personality traits,
  • Problem Solving Skills,
  • Attitudes,
  • Emotional intelligence and more.

Soft Skills Are Not New

Considering the fact that the term soft skills might sound new to many people, the idea is by no means recent in our society. I will explain it. When I was a child growing in a village in Nigeria, Amedokhian Uromi, to be precise, I used to go around with my friends and do all sorts of children games, from hunting birds with catapults, chasing house lizards and playing football, made of anything from orange, plastic to rubber band football.

Those were beautiful days, you know. Those days when children were free to be children and could dream and realize their dreams, experiment on anything and run around the neighborhoods without the fear and insecurity that have now engulfed the whole place.

Really, what I want to tell you is that as children, whether in a village in Uromi, in a big metropolitan city of Lagos, or in London, we have all learned about most of these skills.

Children by their very nature have no difficulties meeting new people and communicating with them, even with children from different languages and cultural backgrounds, like the children of immigrants for example.

Without the intervention of the parents or guardians, children are able to interact among themselves, get into conflicts, resolve them and move beyond for a common objective, having fun and learning new things.

I know you are no longer a child but you were once, so you understand what I mean by these inherent potentials and ability to relearn these interpersonal skills.

Always remember that soft skills are some of the most required across the industries of our time, whether you in B2B marketing, content creation service, in local consulting firm or in any other workplace where you frequently engage with people. Think about that.

You need soft skills to complement your hard skills

Even if you have a certificate from a reputable institution, or maybe you are an immigrant and you have a qualification in your home country before moving overseas, it’s still very important to develop your soft skills, and your advantages for doing so are many.  

Fine, your possible employers, if you are looking for a job, might never ask you to demonstrate your level of soft skills, because it’s not easily measurable like your hard skills, but its’ actually what helps you to retain the job.

The saying is that your hard skills help you get the job but your soft skills will help you retain the job. Actually, you need both of them, especially with the competition in today’s economy, where there are more demands than available offers.

You see, things like Negotiation, communication and emotional intelligence are all part of the non-disclosed job criteria. And these are what many companies are considering these days for hiring new employees. So, you want to give this a serious thought.

As you can see, these fundamental skills might appear simple because they have been carefully wired into our minds while growing up as children. But as we grow old and begin to accumulate more information, especially in the world we live in today, with so many things going on at the same time, we seem to be downgrading these vital skills we perfectly knew from childhood.
