The Architecture of Aligned Success: Defeating Extraction Fatigue Through Momentology – Malaika Simmons
In the modern world, especially for the high-achieving African Diaspora, “hustle” is often treated as a badge of honor. We are taught that to build a legacy, we must give until we are empty. But what happens when the very work meant to empower us begins to erase us?
Learn How to Leverage Your Story through our Story To Asset Framework.
This is the central question explored in a recent episode of The Obehi Podcast, where Obehi Ewanfoh sat down with Malaika Simmons, a Human-Centered Design Strategist and the CEO of Momentology Media.

Malaika is not just a researcher; she is a “world changer” who has spent over 15 years helping leaders move from a state of constant depletion to a life of purposeful impact.
As a doctoral student in International Psychology, Malaika has identified a specific phenomenon called Extraction Fatigue. This isn’t just a common burnout. It is the chronic energy drain that happens when your brilliance is constantly being pulled from you in ways that don’t align with your joy.
Through her Momentology Method, she teaches us how to reclaim our agency and move from being mere consumers of our own time to becoming the architects of our sovereign lives.
Who is Malaika Simmons?
Malaika Simmons is a bridge-builder between corporate excellence and human-centered wellbeing. With a career spanning over 15 years as an award-winning consultant, she has mastered the art of translating complex human data into an actionable strategy.
She currently serves as the COO of the National Accelerator for Discovery in Precision Health, working at the intersection of innovation and culture design.
Beyond her professional accolades, Malaika is a woman deeply rooted in her heritage. She carries a lineage of educators dating back to 1785, a legacy of “Institutional Wisdom” that informs her desire to help others “own their story.”

The Hidden Drain: Understanding Extraction Fatigue
Many high-level professionals in the diaspora feel a sense of weariness that sleep cannot fix. Malaika identified this as an Extraction Fatigue.
“Extraction fatigue is what happens before complete burnout,” Malaika explains. “It’s when you are giving, giving, giving, and you’re being extracted from in all these places that don’t light you up.”
For the African Diaspora, this is often compounded by the “Servant Leader” narrative. We feel a cultural and familial obligation to be the helpers and the doers. While these are noble traits rooted in Ubuntu (the belief that “I am because we are”), they become dangerous when we fail to pour back into ourselves.
When you work from a place of obligation rather than overflow, you are not building a legacy; you are merely managing a slow decline.
The Momentology Method: A Framework for Sovereignty
To combat this fatigue, Malaika developed the Momentology™ Method. This is a repeatable methodology designed to help you operate in the “now” with intention. It is a system for Self-mastery that moves you from “Hope Marketing”, hoping things will get better to “Sovereign Learning.”
The Three Pillars of Momentology
- Awareness: You cannot change what you do not acknowledge. Awareness is the first step in the Mission Clarification phase of the Story to Asset Framework. You must be aware of your current journey and honest about what you want.
- Gratitude (The Inventory): In Malaika’s world, gratitude is more than a feeling; it is a tactical tool. “Gratitude is taking inventory of the things you already have,” she says. By documenting what is working, you turn unscalable expertise into a Signature Asset.
- Expectance: This is the belief that you are in control of your thoughts and actions. It is the move toward Message Activation, where you stop reacting to the world and start designing your future with positive intent.
From Roots to Relevance: The Power of Systems
A key theme in the conversation was the importance of Codification. In the African Diaspora, we often hold our “Secret Sauce” in our heads. We think being the only one who knows how to do a job makes us indispensable.
However, Malaika and Obehi argue the opposite: If it is only in your head, it cannot become a legacy.
Malaika shared a beautiful example of “Cultural Archaeology” from her own family. A cousin created a numbering system to track their lineage back to the 1700s. This system, a simple methodology, allows every new generation to know exactly where they fit in the family tree.

“That numbering system has outlived him,” Malaika notes. “Everyone in the family knows about it. That is a system that is going to live forever.”
This is the essence of Legacy Building. When you codify your process—whether it’s a family history or a business workflow, you create an asset that functions even when you aren’t there. You move from trading time for money to owning a system that serves the collective.
Actionable Insight: Finding Your Zone of Joy
Malaika challenges every leader to look at their daily tasks and ask one simple question: “Do I ‘get to’ do this, or do I ‘have to’ do this?”
- “Get to” = Actions aligned with your Joy and Genius.
- “Have to” = Actions driven by Extraction Fatigue and obligation.
One of Malaika’s clients, a high-level attorney and scientist, found herself miserable despite her success. Through the Momentology lens, she realized she had suppressed her joy for art and comedy.
Once she began painting again, not for money, but for her own spirit, her performance at the law firm actually improved. She was no longer being “extracted”; she was operating from a place of Self-mastery.
The Bridge to Your Legacy
The journey from a “Consumer” of life to an “Architect” of a legacy requires a guide. At AClasses Academy, we have curated over 2,000 articles and 1,000 interviews—including voices like Malaika Simmons—to help you navigate this path.
