What you will learn about Jobs & Careers

Here are the subtopics we are covering in the article series on “Jobs & Careers

Make your passions a reality in business

Passion is the driver you need to succeed in business. It’s the dedication you feel towards your team and company that helps you push through any challenges presented to you.

A lot of people have passion for their business, but not everyone has the drive to see it through. The process may be difficult, but it’s necessary to make your passions a reality.

When you have a successful startup idea that you want to get out of your head and into the world, it sounds exciting. Often, people think too much about the idea and not enough about how their own business will run.

What is even passion?

By passion, we are here referring to your intense enthusiasm and interest in what you do. And it can be the real difference between merely doing something to pass time and getting your job done well.

Now, imagine yourself being able to transform your high energy into your business, you surely will be excited every day. That is why the words of Confucius, the Chinese philosopher continue to make sense to many people even to date:

“Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life”

For more on this argument, there is an article I will suggest you read. It’s titled, “from passion to profession”, available on YourStory.com.

“A lot of people,” said the article “are able to identify their passion but are not able to follow it for long.”

That should be a familiar story if you talk to most people around you. It’s not that people don’t have dreams or passion for something. The question is “do they have the courage to admit it or better still stand to defend their dreams and passion?”

“Some people are really lucky,” continued the article from YourStory.com. “They find their passion and realize that this is everything they ever wanted to do and turn it into a profession. There is nothing like working for your passion.”

The message I want you to get out of that article is this: “Your dream is possible, but you must take the action that will make it work”.

As most people do, don’t keep postponing until the right time because that right time might never come. Yes, you heard me right. There is no guarantee that you will ever have the right time. So, make this moment the right time, make it the perfect time for you to start.

Stop overthinking and just start. But first, let’s see the “how”, and some of the things you can start doing right now to Transform Your Passion into Business.

Become an Expert in Your Industry

At the very least, you need to know what you are talking about. Let’s say, due to your passion for clothes, you have decided to start a T-shirt business. But do you know how the T-shirt business really works? Do you have an idea about fashion? What about graphic design, printing, and the marketing of the T-shirt business?

Business, like every other thing in life, is connected to little bits and pieces and you need to know these pieces if you want to be in business. You simply cannot ignore the pieces that make the business work and still be successful in it. Develop your Business Mindset because it’s often all about the mindset.

You can start by researching the market, and talking to the people in the business. Read books and take classes if you need to. Do whatever it takes to increase your knowledge of the business because the road is going to be rough and full of challenges.

Treat your passion as a business so it can pay you as one

This is another important thing to know about Transforming Your Passion into Business. You need to treat it as a business, otherwise, it will remain what it is, mere passion, and you don’t want that.

If you have not been in business before, you need to know that there is a learning curve, a necessary part of the equation to accomplish your objective. As part of the learning process, you will make many mistakes along the way and that is ok.

According to a Harvard Business Review article, (You’ve Made A Mistake. Now What?) “Anyone who has worked in an office for more than a day has made a mistake”. Every adult should understand that because we all make mistakes.

You need to learn how to motivate yourself and organize your business. Take inventory of the time you spend in your business and your personal life. Note that except in a few cases, your business might not make you any money in the initial stage and this can be months and years.

Yet, your business will keep demanding more money from you or what is known as an investment. Learning how to balance all these, especially if you also working as an employee is extremely critical for the survival of your business.

But don’t be scared, just be prepared and you will eventually overcome the storms.

Share Your Story with People

Learning how to share your story with people is one of the most important skills you must master for the survival of your business. Your business, if really a business is going to be at the service of the people.

It means you are doing something, whether it is a physical product or a service to other people who will then pay you for your service. There is no other way of doing business. Therefore, it is impossible not to communicate or better still, share your story with the people.

That is a simplified explanation but in practical terms, you are going to do a combination of things to share your story with people. And it’s usually a combination of things to reach people who will then become your customers. To learn more about storytelling in your business, especially if you are in the content creation business, check out our training class: Storytelling For Content Creators and Digital Entrepreneurs.

In case you haven’t noticed it yet, there are many people within your network and they will be happy, maybe not all of them, to hear that you have started your business. Tell them through social media postings, word of mouth, or paid ads when you can.

You have now created a business from your passion, so do whatever it takes to get the story out. The more people you can reach, the more chances you have of succeeding in your business endeavor.

Your key takeaways how to transform your passion into a business

The world is shifting to a more entrepreneurial society. People are less and less satisfied with the traditional nine-to-five workday. They’re looking for ways to pursue that passion and are chasing after it instead. With an ever-growing trend of people becoming entrepreneurs, more and more people are able to leave their corporate day jobs and do what they love.

To transform your passion into a business, you first need to figure out what you are passionate about. What do you love doing? Do you love writing? Teaching? Designing clothes? If you can’t figure out what your passions are, try thinking of the things that make you happy outside of work. When was the last time that you got excited about something? What made it so exciting for you?

Once you identify your passions, you can start identifying your skills and figure out if there’s a way to monetize them. For example, if you are passionate about teaching, then you might be good at teaching others or training people on certain topics.

Ok, we have come to the end of this 4-parts series on Jobs & Careers. We will start a different argument next month.
