This decision, announced shortly after high-level talks with U.S. officials, highlights a broader narrative of unequal partnerships and neocolonial dynamics in the region.
The accord in question, signed in 2012, allowed U.S. military personnel and civilian staff from the Department of Defense to operate within Niger’s borders. However, according to Colonel Major Amadou Abdramane, a spokesperson for Niger’s military, the agreement was imposed on Niger, disregarding its sovereignty and democratic principles.
“This agreement is not only profoundly unfair in its substance, but it also does not meet the aspirations and interests of the Nigerien people,” Abdramane emphasized in a televised statement, echoing sentiments shared by many across the nation.
Niger’s relationship with the U.S. has soured since a military junta assumed power in July 2023, an event the U.S. formally classified as a coup. The subsequent withdrawal of U.S. troops stationed in Niger further strained diplomatic ties between the two nations, once considered key regional partners.

The Pentagon has long argued for maintaining a presence in Niger, citing its importance in combating terrorism in the region. However, Niger’s decision to terminate the agreement underscores a growing discontent with what many perceive as a condescending attitude from Western powers.
During a recent visit by a senior U.S. delegation to Niger, tensions escalated as Abdramane accused the Americans of failing to adhere to diplomatic norms and of attempting to dictate Niger’s partnerships.
“The government of Niger regrets the desire of the American delegation to deny the Nigerien people the right to choose their partners and the types of partnerships capable of helping them truly fight against terrorists,” Abdramane remarked, reflecting a sentiment of frustration with perceived interference in Niger’s sovereign affairs.
As Africa increasingly asserts its independence and seeks equitable partnerships on the global stage, Niger’s bold move may serve as a catalyst for reevaluating the nature of international agreements and fostering more balanced relationships between African nations and their Western counterparts.
The consequence of an unfair agreement between the Western government and Africa
The consequences of unfair agreements between Western governments and African nations are of different dimensions and can be very profound in some cases. Oftentimes, they exacerbate existing power differentials and perpetuate neocolonial dynamics.
Such agreements undermine the sovereignty and autonomy of African nations, stifling their ability to pursue policies that align with their interests and aspirations.
They often result in economic exploitation, political instability, and social unrest, as seen in Niger’s recent decision to terminate a military accord with the United States.

Additionally, these agreements foster resentment and mistrust among African populations toward Western powers, hindering efforts to foster genuine partnerships and cooperation.
Ultimately, they perpetuate a cycle of dependency and inequality, impeding Africa’s development and hindering its ability to chart its own path forward on the global stage.
