This is a documentary about the life and legacy of the late Chief Michael A Ojomoh, a great man from Amedokhian, Uromi. Who is Chief Michael A Ojomoh and what is his real legacy? As an orphan child, the young Ojomoh saw a plane flying high in Amedokhian, Uromi and he said he would one day enter such a plane and he was severely beaten on the farm.

He ran away from Amedokhian to Benin city where he eventually made a lot of fortune in his bookshop, frozen fish, and restate business, but he did not abandon his people.

Chief Michael A Ojomoh single handily brought more development to his Amedokhian community like no other before him and none after him to date. That should leave us thinking about the kind of life we are living.

Growing up in Amedokhian, I was one of the many beneficiaries of the kindness of Chief Michael A Ojomoh:

  • I drank the free water he brought to the Amedokhian community of Uromi,
  • I used the tied road, connecting Uromi to Ugboha, thanks to Chief Michael A Ojomoh,
  • As an Amedokhian person, I am proud of our secondary school, thanks to the contribution of Chief Michael A Ojomoh.

Are you from Uromi and Amedokhian? What do you remember of Chief Michael A Ojomoh?

Let’s hear what the interviewees in the documentary “The Life and Legacy Of Chief Michael A Ojomoh” have to say:

Barrister Jerome Akhere Onoimoimilin – former teacher and lawyer in Uromi

He came into this world as a special child and God gave him the wisdom and vision like “I have made you a special child and you should pursue being special”. That was why when he saw the plane, (he never saw a plane before, he doesn’t know how to enter a plane).

He could have been thinking that something strange was passing but he knew that somebody was inside the plane at that age and he said: “I must fly”.

He did not only fly in the plane; he flew in all the areas of his life.

Hon. Friday Itulah – Former Edo State House of Assembly Speaker

To the best of my knowledge, Michael A Ojomoh is the only man who was so recognized by the Oba of Benin (Oba Erediauwa) as a palace chief. My first glimpse of him was in the early 70s (1977 – 1978).

The period I met him, he was a jolly good fellow, somebody one would love to be close to. He was quite amiable. He would come around and the elders in the community will pay a courtesy call to him and he received all of them.

Barrister Louis Ojomoh – the son of late Chief Michael A Ojomoh

His understanding is that when you are blessed by God, the things that become important in your life are being useful to people and trying to improve people’s lives.

As a young man who later become blessed by God, he spread his love to everybody. Nobody was discriminated against. The entire family enjoyed his richness. Nobody was left out.

Growing up, we as his children grew up with the same privileges as everybody else. Our house was always full – we had brothers, cousins, nephews, and nieces, all living with us in the house. We all eat the same food, from the same table. Everybody was educated and we all had the same privileges.

Monday Edo – an Amedokhian man in Ubiaja

What I have to tell other people is that (whatever you have), if you have money, try to help the poor because when you help them, God will help you. That your money will be multiplied.

If you put the money in the bank, it will not help you. Help others so that God will also help you. That is my message to everybody.

Austin Odia Isikhuemen – Chairman CEO of Stynobiz International Limited

The lesson is this: No matter what we think wealth means, at the end of the day, what counts is the name you leave behind. That is why anywhere in the whole of Edo State today or indeed in Nigeria, if you turn up and say “I am Ojomoh” and they ask which Ojomoh and you say chief Michael A. Ojomoh of Uromi, they are going to give you attention because the man lived a good life and left legacies behind.

So, it’s not about the wealth that we pursue every day; it’s not about the buildings or the structure; it’s not about the number of wives. It’s more about the name and good deeds you did that will live after you. The good deed he did will live forever in the annals of Amedokhian.
