About The Guest: Ronald Alexander Williams

Ronald Williams is the author of seven published novels to date. He was born in the Garden, St. James, on the west coast of Barbados. He attended Coleridge and Parry high school where he was a top athlete, representing the school and, later, the nation, in the 1960s and 1970s.

Now retired, he is a former vice president of the College Board, best known for its SAT® and Advanced Placement® tests.  Williams joined the College Board in 2007 from Prince George’s Community College in Largo, Md., where he had served as president since 1999, capping an extensive career with community colleges. Before Prince George’s, he was acting president of the Community College of Philadelphia.

Prior to assuming that position, he served as vice president for academic affairs at the college, where he provided educational leadership and direction for all academic activities.

In 2014 President Barack Obama appointed Dr. Williams to serve on his Advisory Commission on Educational Excellence for African Americans.

From 1991 to 1994, Williams served as vice chancellor for academic affairs and student services for the Minnesota Community College System in St. Paul, Minn. and was Vice Chancellor of the Connecticut Community College system from 1987 to 1991.

Williams an only child, who adored language from birth, began his career in the classroom as an assistant professor of English.

“I used to go to the movies in the 1960s and then deliver the story lines verbatim, for a fee, directly to my colleagues at school,” Williams recalls, “In those days, I even tried to write an American western novel, although I hadn’t gone to America or to the West,” he added humorously.

He attended Lehigh University, in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, where he earned a Ph.D. in literature, a master’s degree in English and bachelor’s degrees in English and History.  During his collegiate sojourn, he wrote for the student magazine.

Williams has been writing all his life, but began to think seriously about it as a means of escaping the pressures of the college presidency.

His published works are Four Saints and an Angel, A Voice from the Tomb, the first in a fantasy fiction saga, A Death in Panama, The Butterflies’ Coat, The Dark Land, Eurydice’s Song, the second of the saga, and The Fall of Autumn Leaves released in November 2021.
