About The Guest: Shina Ahmad
Shina Ahmad is a dynamic, enthusiastic, and self-motivated professional with over two decades of experience in story development, teaching, writing, and marketing environments.
A passionate creative producer, lecturer, and screenwriter with a deep love for story, Shina is a Canadian national who lived overseas for 21 years, having had the privilege of focusing on story development, story consulting, and teaching in the United Arab Emirates, Thailand, and now in Canada.
She has extensive experience working with diverse and talented teams of writers, leading them through research, character development, world-building, and crafting the storyline in a dynamic writer’s room environment.
Using her knowledge and experience in content development, coupled with her passion for teaching story and screenwriting, Shina has been conducting tailor-made workshops and seminars for individual writers, writing teams, production companies, and television stations.
She has taught in various venues, ranging from a university classroom in Dubai, to an amphitheatre in Abu Dhabi, to a writer’s retreat in Koh Samui. At present, she is adapting some of her courses to be taught online.
Her journey as a lecturer began in 2012 at SAE Institute in Dubai, where she taught Screenwriting & Adaptation to film students enrolled in the Bachelor of Film Production program. During this time, she also ran a series of scriptwriting masterclasses for the animation students enrolled at the Cartoon Network Animation Academy in Abu Dhabi.
Her short play A Day at the Beach, directed by Julia Szik, received outstanding reviews at Short & Sweet Festival Dubai 2015. At the inaugural festival in 2013, Shina’s short play Appeals Court, directed by Enzo Messina, won the People’s Choice Award. In 2012, Shina won the grand prize in the Women in Film and Television (WIFT) Short Screenwriting Competition for her short script The Yellow Suitcase.
Shina had previously risen through the ranks in corporate marketing, working for multinationals in Dubai — her last position being at Visa International. Today, she can attest to having a solid grasp of the field, built on six years of execution experience. She has managed a range of activities: from BTL print production and website development to campaign planning and sponsorship to strategic planning and budgeting.
Through her exposure to various industries, namely the Financial Services, Oil & Gas, and IT sectors, she has also gained a thorough understanding of both market-level and international business practices. This business acumen has helped her tremendously in her role as a creative producer.
Shina graduated in 1999 with an Honors B.A. in Communication Studies, having majored in film and video production, from the University of Windsor in Canada. That same summer, she moved to Toronto and joined the production company, The Film Works Ltd., full-time to work on the acclaimed feature film Love Come Down, directed by Clement Virgo, which premiered at the 2000 Toronto International Film Festival and went on to win
three Genie Awards. Her first short film, Without Papers, earned Special Jury Selection at the Telefilm Student
