Theme: Arrival, Orientation & the Efik Legacy 

Morning – Arrival at Margaret Ekpo International Airport, Calabar 

  • Welcome reception with Efik cultural dance, drumming, and kola nut ceremony. 
  • Transfer to a heritage boutique hotel overlooking the Calabar Creek. 

Afternoon – Calabar Orientation Tour 

  • Guided introduction to Calabar’s role in precolonial trade, colonial governance, and missionary history. 
  • Drive-by of Millennium Park, colonial buildings, and Mary Slessor Roundabout

Evening – Efik Royal Welcome Dinner 

  • Feast on Afang soup, Edikang Ikong, pounded yam, and bushmeat, with palm wine and live traditional music. 
  • Storytelling circle led by local griots about the Efik royal lineage and Calabar’s cultural glory.

Morning – Visit to the National Museum, Calabar 

  • Former Colonial Government House built in the 1800s from shipped-in Scandinavian pine. 
  • View original trade documents, furnishings, slave records, and Efik regalia. 
  • Special session: “The Slave Coast and Diaspora Connections” 

Midday – Duke Town Church & Mary Slessor’s House 

  • Explore the first Christian mission base in Calabar and climb the belltower for panoramic views. 
  • Walk through Mary Slessor’s preserved home, the Scottish missionary who helped abolish twin infanticide. 

Afternoon – Chief Ekpo Bassey’s House 

  • Discover the legacy of this Efik kingmaker and nationalist. Tour the colonial-era mansion, now a national monument, and engage in a short lecture on African resistance and leadership.
