Morning 

  • Arrival at Blaise Diagne International Airport (Dakar): Upon arrival in Dakar, Senegal, you will be warmly welcomed by your guide, who will provide you with an overview of your heritage journey. Afterward, you’ll board a ferry for a scenic transfer to Goree Island, the historic heart of the Atlantic Slave Trade
  • Hotel Check-in on Goree Island: After arriving on the island, check in to your charming, locally owned hotel, where you’ll experience local hospitality while being surrounded by the serene beauty of Goree’s cobblestone streets and pastel-colored buildings

Afternoon 

  • Orientation Walk of Goree Island: Begin your exploration with a guided walking tour around the island. As you stroll through narrow alleys, past colonial buildings, and along coastal paths, your guide will provide insight into the island’s rich history, from its time as a European trading post to its dark role in the slave trade
  • Relax by the Beach: After your tour, enjoy some free time to relax by the beach. Take in the views of the Atlantic Ocean, which once witnessed the separation of families and the forced migration of millions of African men, women, and children during the transatlantic slave trade

  • Welcome Dinner at a Local Restaurant: Enjoy a traditional Senegalese dinner with dishes such as thieboudienne (fish and rice) and yassa poulet (chicken in onion sauce), accompanied by a refreshing glass of bissap (hibiscus drink).

  • Visit the Maison des Esclaves (Slave House): Begin your day with a visit to the Maison des Esclaves, one of the most iconic sites on the island. Built in 1786, this slave house was used to hold enslaved Africans before they were shipped across the Atlantic. The Door of No Return is a sobering symbol of the painful journey that many people endured. A guide will walk you through the building and its history, helping you understand the emotional gravity of this place. 
  • Explore the William Ponty School: After the Slave House, continue to the William Ponty School (1770), a colonial-era educational institution. While originally intended for the children of colonial officials, the school reflects the intersection of European colonial power and local African culture on the island. 

Afternoon 

  • Visit the Maritime Museum: Explore the Maritime Museum (1835), housed in a former colonial building, where you will learn about Goree Island’s role in maritime trade and the slave trade, as well as its evolution over the centuries. The museum provides a detailed historical narrative, with exhibitions on shipping routes, African diaspora, and historical artifacts
  • Tour the Government Palace (Palais du Gouvernement): Visit the Palais du Gouvernement, an important colonial building built in 1864, which was once the administrative center of French colonial rule on the island. You will learn about the political history of Goree during the colonial period and its strategic importance in the transatlantic slave trade

  • Return Ferry Ride to Dakar: In the early afternoon, you will take the ferry back to Dakar. Once in Dakar, you’ll have some free time for shopping or to explore Dakar’s vibrant culture before heading to the airport. 
  • Transfer to Blaise Diagne International Airport: You will be transferred to the airport in time for your departure flight
