Founded by Obehi Ewanfoh, WeDiasporan is more than just an organization. It’s a powerful platform that invites you to take part in something bigger than yourself—something that will resonate for generations to come.

By connecting African diaspora communities across the globe, WeDiasporan is transforming cultural experiences into powerful engines for social change, economic empowerment, and educational advancement.

This is your opportunity to join that movement. But why should you consider volunteering with WeDiasporan? And how can it help you connect with others, develop new skills, and make a lasting difference?

Obehi Ewanfoh’s Journey: A Story of Passion and Purpose

Obehi Ewanfoh’s journey to founding WeDiasporan didn’t start in a boardroom or with grand plans. It began with a question: Who are we, and what can we achieve together?

As a young writer growing up in Uromi, Nigeria, Obehi developed a deep curiosity about identity, culture, and social justice. His early experiences as a writer laid the foundation for a lifetime of exploring Africa’s rich cultural heritage and its complex relationship with the world. But his story is also deeply personal.

In 2004, Obehi moved to Italy, where he began to see firsthand the struggles and aspirations of African diaspora communities living abroad. As a Nigerian writer based in Verona, Italy, Obehi found himself caught between two worlds—the one he had left behind in Nigeria and the new reality of navigating the complexities of life in Europe.

His passion for storytelling and cultural preservation grew from these experiences, leading him to write extensively on topics like diaspora tourism, agribusiness, and the African diaspora’s collective identity.

Through his podcast and numerous books, including The Storytelling Mastery and Underdevelopment in Africa: My Hands Are Clean, Obehi has encouraged thousands of people to embrace their stories as powerful tools for social impact.

He is an advocate for the power of personal narratives in transforming not just individual lives but entire communities. His commitment to social entrepreneurship and diaspora empowerment led him to create WeDiasporan, an organization dedicated to helping individuals reconnect with their African roots while fostering sustainable economic growth.

WeDiasporan’s Mission: Empowering the Diaspora Through Collective Action

At its core, WeDiasporan is on a mission to empower the African diaspora by reconnecting people to their roots, embracing shared cultural heritage, and creating a global network of support and collaboration.

The organization believes that when individuals and communities come together with a shared sense of purpose, they can tackle some of the world’s most pressing challenges—from poverty and inequality to cultural erasure and political disenfranchisement.

Through initiatives like The Diaspora Memorial & Tourism Exchange (DMTE), WeDiasporan facilitates cultural and heritage tourism that allows people of African descent to reconnect with their ancestral roots through travel.

These journeys are not just about sightseeing, they are about rediscovering the richness of African cultures and contributing to economic development by supporting local communities.

But cultural exchange is only one part of the story. WeDiasporan fosters collaboration and builds partnerships across the globe to empower local communities, especially through projects like SCADI (The Smart Cassava & Agribusiness Development Initiative) in Nigeria.

Through agricultural training and education, WeDiasporan is developing an empowerment program for local farmers in the Esan region of Edo State. The initiative is aimed at strengthening food security, creating employment opportunities, and driving sustainable economic growth.

At the heart of this project, SCADI lies the power of connection, unity, and knowledge-sharing. It’s a vision rooted in collaboration, and volunteers are essential to bringing it to life.

The Bigger Picture: The African Diaspora’s Role in Global Change

In recent years, the African diaspora has become a driving force in global change, contributing to innovations in business, culture, politics, and social entrepreneurship. According to the African Diaspora Policy Centre, members of the African diaspora are estimated to send more than $60 billion annually to their home countries through remittances, making them key players in economic development.

The diaspora communities are crucial in preserving and promoting African culture globally, bridging gaps between continents and creating lasting relationships that benefit both local and international communities.
